Beta blockers are prescribed to treat patients with a range of conditions, including hypertension, angina, heart conditions, migraines, glaucoma and atrial fibrillation. They block certain receptors to reduce heart rate and dilate blood vessels to improve the flow of blood. Beta-1 selective blockers are a class of beta blockers generally used to treat patients with high blood pressure. Examples of these include Tenormin (atenolol) and Lopressor (metoprolol). Beta blockers may also be used to decrease pressure on the eyes by reducing excess eye fluid.
