Antidepressant augmentation drugs are medicines prescribed to patients suffering from depression and similar disorders when the first line of medication therapy proves ineffective. The second medication usually has a different mechanism of action from the first medicine prescribed. The aim is to target different brain functions in the hope that symptoms will abate. A commonly used antidepressant augmentation drug is Abilify (aripiprazole).
