Cholinesterase inhibitors are used to treat mild or moderate dementia caused by Alzheimer's disease. They work on the central nervous system to block the action of an enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Commonly prescribed cholinesterase inhibitors include Cognex (tacrine), Aricept (donepezil) and Razadyne (galantamine).
