Alpha-glucosidase inhibitor antidiabetics are prescribed to patients with diabetes type 2 to help control their blood sugar levels. Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors slow the digestion of the carbohydrates and delay absorption of sugars. This slows the rise in blood glucose levels after eating and throughout the day. These medications are often prescribed as part of treatment that may also include changes in diet and lifestyle. Precose (acarbose) is one of the most commonly prescribed alpha-glucosidase inhibitors.
