Third generation cephalosporin antibiotics are medicines used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including gonorrhea, meningitis, E. coli and hospital acquired infections. Cephalosporin antibiotics are beta-lactam antibiotics that inhibit the cell wall of bacteria. There are five generations of cephalosporin antibiotics, each with their own uses and characteristics. Commonly prescribed 3rd generation cephalosporin antibiotics include Suprax (cefixime) and Cedax (ceftibuten).
