Stroke Risk Reduction

Stroke Risk Reduction

A stroke is a life-threatening event that occurs when a blood clot cuts off the supply of blood to the brain. Strokes are medical emergencies and emergency medical assistance should be sought immediately in the event of a suspected stroke.

There are several measures that can be taken to reduce the likelihood of a stroke occurring or reoccurring. Lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, drinking less alcohol, eating a healthier diet (lower in saturated fats and salt), and getting more exercise are good places to start.

Other methods of stroke risk reduction include reducing high blood pressure, cholesterol and ensuring that other existing or underlying conditions are properly controlled, such as diabetes or atrial fibrillation. Medication is often prescribed by doctors to help achieve these goals.

Drug classes used in stroke risk reduction include ADP (adenosine diphosphate) receptor antagonist platelet aggregation inhibitors, factor Xa inhibitors, direct thrombin inhibitors, platelet aggregation inhibitors, combinations, angiotensin-II receptor blockers/ARBs, cyclo-oxygenase inhibitor platelet aggregation inhibitors, and protease-activated receptor-1 (PAR-1) antagonists.
