Postherpetic Neuralgia

Postherpetic Neuralgia

Postherpetic neuralgia is a complication associated with shingles in which patients experience lingering pain as a result of nerve damage. It affects the nerve fibers, causing a burning sensation that may last for some time after the rash from shingles disappears. The condition is more common among people over 60 years of age, but around one in five people with shingles will develop postherpetic neuralgia.

Symptoms of postherpetic neuralgia include pain lasting more than three months after the visible signs of shingles have gone, sensitivity to touch, and itching and numbness. Pain may be burning, sharp, or a deep ache. The pain may also cause problems with concentration, lack of appetite, depression, fatigue, and problems sleeping.

Treatment of postherpetic neuralgia focuses on alleviating the symptoms. In most cases, the condition improves over time, but there is currently no cure. The likelihood of postherpetic neuralgia developing may be reduced by the herpes zoster vaccine. Drug classes used to treat postherpetic neuralgia are neuropathic pain and peripheral neuropathy agents, anticonvulsants, miscellaneous, and other topical musculoskeletal products.
