Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition that weakens bones and makes them more brittle and increases the likelihood of bone fractures. Among the most common injuries patients experience are wrist and hip fractures and fractures the vertebrae. In severe cases, minor stresses on bones, even coughing or small bumps, result in painful fractures.

Back pain and a stooped posted are early signs of osteoporosis, but it is a symptomless condition so often lies undiagnosed until a patient is injured. Osteoporosis is usually diagnosed in people over the age of 50 and women are more at risk than men.

Medication is one of the treatment options for patients with osteoporosis. Lifestyle changes, such as getting more exercise and increasing calcium and vitamin D intake also help strengthen bones and reduce the chance of further injuries. Bisphosphonates are used to halt further bone mass loss. Other treatments include: calcitonin therapy, Raloxifene, and hormone therapies using estrogen or teriparatide.
