Meningitis

Meningitis

Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes around the spinal cord or brain. There are a variety of possible causes of infection, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, or malignant tumors. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention there are around 4,000 cases of bacterial meningitis in the U.S. each year. Three varieties of meningitis exist: neonatal, infantile, and adult. Adult forms of meningitis are characterized by fever, headaches, a stiff neck, aching muscles, nausea and vomiting.

Meningitis is a serious condition that requires hospitalization and treatment for the infection. Treatment of meningitis depends on the cause of the infection, but common drug classes include penicillin antibiotics, cephalosporin antibiotics, oral B2 stimulants, carbapenem antibiotics, and anaerobicides.
