Cough

Cough

Coughing is a response to an irritant in the airway or throat and serves the function of clearing these parts of the body. An occasional cough is a normal and healthy bodily function, but persistent coughing or one that brings up discolored or bloody mucus may be a sign there is a more serious underlying condition.

There are a variety of possible causes for persistent or chronic coughing including respiratory illnesses such as COPD, bronchitis, or asthma. Other possible causes may include smoking, the common cold, the flu, acute sinusitis, or allergies.

A number of different medications are available to alleviate a cough, but treatment may also depend on the underlying causes.
