Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease, also known as coronary heart disease, is damage or disease of the major blood vessels (arteries) that supply the heart with essential nutrients, blood, and oxygen. It is normally caused by the build-up of plaque in the arteries, which causes them to narrow and reduces blood flow to the heart.

Symptoms of coronary artery disease are angina (chest pain), shortness of breath and a heart attack. The latter occurs when there is a complete blockage of one of the coronary arteries. Risk factors include a family history of heart disease, obesity, high levels of stress, age, diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, stress, poor diet, and physical inactivity.

Drug classes commonly used to treat coronary artery disease include HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors/statins, dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers, fibric acid derivatives/fibrates, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors/ACEIs, HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors/statins and cardiovascular agent combinations, angiotensin-ii receptor blockers/ARBs, and niacin/vitamin B3 supplements.
