Common cold symptoms are usually the result of a viral infection. The common cold is one of the most frequently experienced illnesses, with adults in the United States suffering on average two or three colds every year. 

Symptoms are usually mild and last for between one and two weeks. They include a runny or stuffy nose; a cough; a sore throat; congestion; sneezing; body aches; mild headaches; mild fever; and a general feeling of being unwell. 

The common cold is usually treated with over-the-counter medication, vitamins, and plenty of rest and fluids. Drug classes commonly prescribed to treat the symptoms of the common cold include phenothiazine antiemetics antihistamine, non-opioid antitussive, and decongestant combinations, antihistamine and opioid antitussive combinations, analgesics with and without antipyretic activity, non-opioid antitussive, decongestant, and expectorant combinations, and decongestants.
