To diagnose ADHD, doctors look for six or more signs or symptoms designated by the American Psychiatric Association, including, among others: impulsive behavior, hyperactivity, inattention, inability to complete tasks, disorganization and mood swings. Many of the symptoms cause difficulties in everyday life, impacting on work, relationships and family life.

Treatment of ADHD often involves behavioral therapies and lifestyle changes to boost self esteem, control symptoms improve the quality of life for individuals with ADHD and for those close to them.
