Acne

Acne is a skin condition caused by pores becoming clogged with oil and dead skin, resulting in blackheads, whiteheads, blemishes and pimples. A number of different varieties of acne exist, such as comedonal, papulopustular and nodulocystic. Various factors may be responsible for acne developing, including hormones, medication side effects or using cosmetics with too much oil. Patients with a history of acne in the family may also prove at greater risk of developing the condition.

Mild acne will often clear up with a more regimented skin hygiene routine or using over-the-counter medication. Treatment options open to patients with acne include topical medication such as Finacea (azelaic acid), retinoid medication or macrolide antibiotics (benzoyl peroxide). Medication used for birth control may also be prescribed when doctors believe a hormone imbalance is at the root of the condition. Should symptoms persist, patients are advised to consult with a doctor or dermatologist.
